T-Mobile is gearing up to integrate Starlink’s direct-to-cell connectivity into its plans, offering customers an exciting way to stay connected even in cellular dead zones. But how will users pay for this cutting-edge service?
A Free Perk or Paid Add-On?
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert revealed during a recent earnings call that the Starlink service will likely be a free perk for subscribers on T-Mobile’s most expensive plans. However, those on lower-tier plans can still access it through a paid add-on.
“This will be another reason—maybe the most compelling reason in a long time—to self-select up our rate card,” Sievert explained. Premium plans will include the service, but those who don’t want to upgrade can purchase it à la carte.
Staying Connected Everywhere
For T-Mobile, Starlink isn’t just about offering satellite connectivity—it’s also a competitive advantage. Sievert emphasized that the service would set T-Mobile apart by enabling customers to stay connected wherever they can see the sky.
The technology is still in beta and currently supports SMS texts. However, with pending regulatory approvals and more satellite launches, the service is expected to expand to voice calls and internet downloads in the future.
Beta Testing and Future Rollouts
T-Mobile launched the Starlink beta earlier this month, initially limiting it to a small group of customers and focusing testing in the northern U.S., where satellite coverage is denser. The beta was initially restricted to select Samsung models but has since expanded to iPhones running iOS 18.3.
“And what you’re going to see is a phasing,” Sievert said. “First, limited numbers in the beta. Then, we’ll widen that aperture by quite a bit. And soon after, we begin commercial service.”
What’s Next for Customers?
Interested users can still sign up for the beta on T-Mobile’s website. The rollout strategy ensures that more customers will have access to this game-changing technology in the near future.
Whether as a premium perk or a paid add-on, T-Mobile’s Starlink service promises to redefine connectivity for customers nationwide.
