Opportunities in Nepal’s IT Sector: A Possibility of Earning 1 Trillion if Skilled Workforce is Produced

Nepal’s information technology (IT) sector holds significant economic potential. Experts have stated that if a skilled workforce can be produced, the sector could generate over 1 trillion annually. This opinion was shared by experts at a ‘Startup’ and ‘SME’ conference organized by the Nepali Congress’s Department of Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprise Development.

Potential for Development in the IT Sector

According to Sulabh Budhathoki, head of Innovative Nepal (ING) Group, Nepal has a wealth of opportunities in the IT sector. If investments are made in producing a skilled workforce, Nepal can generate substantial revenue from IT services exports. “There is a need to allocate quotas for IT education in all colleges to make it more accessible,” he stated.

Currently, IT has overtaken the tourism sector to become the largest global source of economic revenue.

Technical Education and Vocational Knowledge

Prof. Dr. Mahananda Chalisey, Dean of Tribhuvan University, emphasized the need for the government to pay special attention to technical and vocational education. “The government formulates policies, but there has been insufficient preparation on how to connect students with technical and vocational skills,” he remarked. According to Chalisey, only practical and applicable curricula can accelerate the development of this sector.

Startups and Entrepreneurship

Vibhushan Bisht, founder of Young Innovation, highlighted that an entrepreneurial mindset is necessary to start an IT venture. “Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying problems and finding solutions. An idea has no value until it is implemented,” he said. He emphasized that the education system should prioritize entrepreneurship and encourage the creation of new businesses.

Economic Transformation Measures

Mrigendra Karki, executive director of Seenas, stated that Nepal needs to brand and promote its products and services in international markets according to changing times. “By promoting products made in Nepal based on the country’s geography and characteristics, overall economic transformation is possible,” he said.

Nepal’s IT sector can significantly contribute to the country’s economic development. If skilled workforce production, improvements in technical education, and the encouragement of entrepreneurship are achieved, this sector will pave the way for economic prosperity. Realizing this potential requires coordination between the government, educational institutions, and the private sector.
